Title: Software Inc mod site
Post by: JackBank on March 31, 2016, 07:13:54 PM
I am currently creating a place where you can download mods. This is most likely a last option to download mods but I think this could be a great idea.

The site will include following:

Hopefully more will come, so this is a quite big project for me and I there will be some support :) I know many disagree and this doesn't seem like a good idea since we have the forum and steam workshop, but I am going give it a try.

I think it's a great Idea.
But there's a question for you: how will the downloads work?
I don't know how will you that, maybe use the standard download links (GitHub, Mediafire,...) or you wanting to do something else?

Still great Idea :)

Maybe do a poll?

Oh and for uploading mod, I cannot make it so you can register and upload etc. what I will do is add a contact e-mail give some instruction and let people send me their info about mod.

Mate, a login/register system would be damn easy to code in Meteor for example.  Want me to GitHub you a moddb style CMS/user system in Meteor in like... idk, 4 hours?

But please wait, I would not like you take make something that might not be used

And it's most likely not gonna be used since I am not sure if I want people to be putting their mods up themselves and I am not sure what I would be using it for tbh. other than commenting and publishing mods on the page.

It's more a question of how far khornel wants to take Workshop integration.  normally you only subscribe to mods, and they "just work" (thus no need for a third party mod site.)

The biggest reason I want to do this is to create something and learn and get better. It's not really for advertisement or anything. Just an alternative thing to have a list of mod, which I had thought of.

I don't know, you could ask a lot of mod sites that question.

@JackBank

I think the Steam Workshop integration for Software Inc is pretty good. I think if we develop the forum a bit more it can be as good as a normal mod site OR your mod site could simply be a beautification of the threads on the forum and also link the steam workshop. Tiles of previews and then a forum thread link and a steam workshop link. Could be automated via Steam's API and simple forum spider scraping. Let me know if you want any help prototyping a site that works like that.

A small update.

I am currently working on a proper system with login, profile etc.

Profile will have (currently thought of adding)
- Username
- Age (not required)
- Fullname (not required)
- Role (admin or member)
- Steam Account (not required, but will give users a link to your steam account)
- Software Inc Forum (not required but will give users a link to your forum profile)
- Bio (Not required but here you can write something about yourself)
- Uploads (If you have uploaded anything it will be featured here)

Frontpage will have
- Most recent mods

Mods page will have
- All mods uploaded, set up in categories

When you go to a mods page it will have
- Name
- Description
- Version
- Game Version
- Changelog
- When it was uploaded to the site
- Comment section

Still work in progress there is ofcourse going to pages like FAQ, Terms Of Use, Contact and just incase it would happen there will also be a report button to report mods.

Any suggestion to the site is appreciated

I suggest you use bootstrap 4 for this project. Your idea is a great one, and I am looking forward to it.
As for file storage, software inc mods aren't the biggest of files so a simple 1TB hard drive should handle it fine for years even.

Bootstrap 4 is still in alpha (currently 4.0.0-alpha.6) ;)

If you search for workshops downloads as non-Steam:
https://softwareinc.ftp.sh/
(yeah, site is from me...)

Fully Root Server isnt cheap* (with 1 TB Drive AND RAID !) *there are however some providers...

@JackBank: What is the status of your project?

If someone needs some space for workshop content - send me an mail

I was too optimistic about this project, as I currently don't have too much time on my hand atm.
The project would have to be started over if I start it again and if I do it will not be at the moment sadly.

I do have a lot of ideas for this, but working on it alone was too optimistic and I had to put it on hold :)

I do have a trello with ideas I have/had for the site.

"Working on it alone" hm? I could help you maybe - I have some experience with website making. :)

I will be gone for about 2 weeks, and I might consider revive this project

until then I have this trello, which I'm not done with and Ideas will also come along as I work on the project and probably before

If you think I'm missing anything please tell me :)

Hi, can I abuse of your topic?

I think that they need to improve the entire site (blog and board includes). When I enter this forum I become sad because.. well.. I do not see a lively community: - \

I believe more people is using steam community/workshop more than the forum now. It were much more active before the release of steam workshop. It is much easier to use when you have to game on steam. I believe that's why you don't see that much activity on this forum.

That's also why I think a site like this could work. It's supposed to make it easy for people to upload and share mods, a site to gather all the mods in a bigger collection and gather people together.

Oh yes, you are talking about non-steam version. I agree with you but imho your site should work togheter a revamped community.

So the trello https://trello.com/b/CkmLGmlg/website (https://trello.com/b/CkmLGmlg/website) is up and running, I am now working on making some designs in photoshop of how I sort of want the layout and design of the site.

JackBank, this work is unofficial done by yourself or it will become the new official site for Coredumping?

Anyway, I have experience with forum like phpBB and vB and I can help you set the board. We can talk in pm if you want, just let me know.

It would be unofficial done by me :)

And for forum I am not really into using a separate forum. It's supposed to be integrated into the website itself.
